THOMAS SPLETT  started as a radio editor in the late ‘90s before he was writing many years as a journalist for German newspapers and magazines about music and art. Although his professional career has taken him away from music journalism, his love for music has never dried up since listening to The Beatles as a child for the first time. In his free time he’s still writing about the music he loves – among others for West Coast Music Magazine. Through his passion for Yacht Rock, West Coast Music, Soul and R&B he came into contact with Malone DiMano and collaborated with him in various podcasts and radio shows. He has joined with the LATE NIGHT DREAM team to take the listeners each month on a sonic flight to California with a tasteful selection of West Coast, Yacht Rock, AOR, Blue-Eyed Soul, R&B and Brazilian Boogie.

LATE NIGHT DREAM Presents Thomas Splett Flying To California Year 1979 EP1S3

September 15, 2019

2019 celebrates a very special year in music history its 40th anniversary, the year 1979. On the threshold of a new decade, the sound from L.A. was in full bloom. It was the time of the legendary "hired guns" and the big studios, of musical perfectionism and high fidelity. The fact that the year would be a highlight for West Coast music and AOR lovers was already evident in January, when the Doobie Brothers entered the charts with their classic single "What A Fool Believes". In the following months, countless classics of the genre were released before the year came to a worthy close with the self-titled debut album and West Coast masterpiece by Christopher Cross, which was released in December. The first episode of "Flying To California" in the new season brings back favourites, classics and the obscure of West Coast, Yacht Rock, AOR and blue-eyed Soul from this special year. On this flight, we welcome on board Kenny Loggins, Lauren Wood, Orleans, the Average White Band, Rickie Lee Jones, Marc Jordan, Rupert Holmes, Toto, Pages and many more. LATE NIGHT DREAM Presents Thomas Splett Flying To California EP7S2

May 17, 2019

With the new episode of "Flying To California" we dare an experiment. This time it's not about classics and less known gems of West Coast, AOR and Midnight Disco of the 70s and 80s, but about current pop and dance music as it is played in the clubs or even on the radio. Music that is elegant and smooth, that invites you to relax or have fun. Above all it's about mood and playing with memories, about warm bass sounds, a carefully placed saxophone solo, about slick guitar licks à la Nile Rodgers, and of course a feeling of sun or balmy summer nights - whether on Venice Beach or the Côte d'Azur. The smooth sound of the 70s and 80s is not dead, but part of today's pop DNA. Or to say it with Marcus Liesenfeld aka DJ Supermarkt, DJ veteran and curator of the sublime Too Slow To Disco series: "That sound is now part of today's musical landscape."
So sit back and enjoy today's flight into the world of modern pop music with Roosevelt, Flamingosis, Morabeza Tobacco, Jungle, Izo FitzRoy, PREP, Brian Ellis, l'impératrice (Too Slow To Disco Neo - En France) and many more.

LATE NIGHT DREAM Presents Thomas Splett Flying To California EP3S2

December 09, 2018

At the end of the year, it's time to look back at some of the musical highlights of 2018. It was a year of excellent albums and interesting encounters. Interviews are always an adventure trip. At best, they give an insight into the way of working and the world of thoughts of artists and musicians. The result of our work are 20 interviews with established artists, musicians, DJs, filmmakers and ambitious newcomers for Late Night Dream in the past twelve months. You will find many of my interview partners in this last episode of the year of "Flying to California" as well as songs from my personal favourite albums of 2018.
I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the interview partners who gave us an insight into their work and passion – and of course Malone Di Mano for the great mixes. Without him "Flying To California" would be unthinkable.

LATE NIGHT DREAM Presents Thomas Splett Flying To California 'My Favorite Songs'

November 11, 2018

A best-of selection of your favourite songs is always a difficult job, even with an epic volume of 30 tracks. I am all the more pleased that my friend Malone Di Mano has suggested this project to me as a special edition of our “Flying To California" series.
The songs collected here reflect, in a way, my love story with a special genre mix that I didn't even have on my list ten years ago: Yacht Rock. Of course I have loved songs like “What A Fool Believes” by The Doobie Brothers or “Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac since my childhood. They belong to the unconscious listening experiences, which you had as a child in the back seat during car trips with the parents in the late 70s/ early 80s. But as with many others, rock, heavy metal, jazz and especially soul and 70s R&B dominated my musical world from youth on. So some of my all-time heroes like Marvin Gaye, Earth, Wind & Fire and Patrice Rushen had to be part of this special mix.
In the late 2000s it was the Channel 101 series “Yacht Rock" – written, directed, and produced by J. D. Ryznar – that sparked my enthusiasm for this genre mix of Soft Rock, West Coast and AOR, which made me plunge deeper and deeper into this musical rabbit hole. Starting with Steely Dan, The Doobies, The Eagles and Hall & Oates, I discovered artists like Pages, Bill House, Nielsen & Pearson, Ambrosia, Player and the great Ned Doheny, whose brilliant “Get It Up For Love" opened the first edition of Marcus Liesenfeld's legendary “Too Slow To Disco" series and impressively demonstrated that this music will continue to work and conquer new audiences.
The fact that I can present this mix here today indirectly goes back to a band that rekindled my enthusiasm for West Coast music in 2016: Young Gun Silver Fox. I owe it to the editor of West Coast Music magazine, Nick Mawson, that I became aware of them at all. My first enthusiastic FB Post about their debut “West End Coast" was the starting point that brought me into contact with many great artists, musicians, DJs and music lovers over the past two years, culminating in the close collaboration with Malone Di Mano and the Late Night Dream Team. What a journey!

Therefore, ladies and gentlemen, take your seat and accompany me on a trip down memory lane with this special edition of "Flying To California"!
