A best-of selection of your favourite songs is always a difficult job, even with an epic volume of 30 tracks. I am all the more pleased that my friend Malone Di Mano has suggested this project to me as a special edition of our “Flying To California" series.
The songs collected here reflect, in a way, my love story with a special genre mix that I didn't even have on my list ten years ago: Yacht Rock. Of course I have loved songs like “What A Fool Believes” by The Doobie Brothers or “Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac since my childhood. They belong to the unconscious listening experiences, which you had as a child in the back seat during car trips with the parents in the late 70s/ early 80s. But as with many others, rock, heavy metal, jazz and especially soul and 70s R&B dominated my musical world from youth on. So some of my all-time heroes like Marvin Gaye, Earth, Wind & Fire and Patrice Rushen had to be part of this special mix.
In the late 2000s it was the Channel 101 series “Yacht Rock" – written, directed, and produced by J. D. Ryznar – that sparked my enthusiasm for this genre mix of Soft Rock, West Coast and AOR, which made me plunge deeper and deeper into this musical rabbit hole. Starting with Steely Dan, The Doobies, The Eagles and Hall & Oates, I discovered artists like Pages, Bill House, Nielsen & Pearson, Ambrosia, Player and the great Ned Doheny, whose brilliant “Get It Up For Love" opened the first edition of Marcus Liesenfeld's legendary “Too Slow To Disco" series and impressively demonstrated that this music will continue to work and conquer new audiences.
The fact that I can present this mix here today indirectly goes back to a band that rekindled my enthusiasm for West Coast music in 2016: Young Gun Silver Fox. I owe it to the editor of West Coast Music magazine, Nick Mawson, that I became aware of them at all. My first enthusiastic FB Post about their debut “West End Coast" was the starting point that brought me into contact with many great artists, musicians, DJs and music lovers over the past two years, culminating in the close collaboration with Malone Di Mano and the Late Night Dream Team. What a journey!
Therefore, ladies and gentlemen, take your seat and accompany me on a trip down memory lane with this special edition of "Flying To California"!
